Damage Prevention Specialist

Job Summary:

The Damage Prevention Specialist is responsible for identifying, locating and marking the location of all
partner subsurface utilities in order to minimize damage or disruption of service due to construction
excavation activities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collect GPS pinpointed data to map locates of underground utilities, including
    telecommunications, electric power, cable TV, gas, water, and sewer systems.
  • Thoroughly map underground utilities in a designated area, accurately updating collection maps
    of the location, completing the necessary documentation, and effectively photographing each
    job site.
  • Collect data of excavated utilities on a job site, including potholes and cross-bores.
  • Review proposed fiber placement path and report potential obstacles or alternative routes that
    may help make the job more safe or more efficient to install.
  • Report any issues in the field that may prevent accidents.
  • Work closely with contractors and utility locate companies to coordinate necessary resources
    for existing buried infrastructure avoidance.
  • Handle and maintain GPS RTK equipment, handheld devices and a company provided vehicle.
  • Efficient use and understanding of mobile data collection software
  • Document interactions, site information and utilities in organizational software.
  • Communicate with clients, engineers and management.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Vocational school training preferred
  • On-the-job training offered
  • Class E Valid Driver’s License required

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to stand and walk up to ten hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 lbs.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time and push or pull 50-pound loads at a time.
  • Must be able to ride in a vehicle up to four hours to travel to and from job sites.
  • Must be able to work in varying weather and temperatures.
  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Must have flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the business.
